Events Report

The past year was another banner year for dinner meetings, as we featured a wonderful variety of guest speakers on all sorts of editorially related topics.

We kicked off the past financial year with the August launch of Honorary Life Member Janet Mackenzie's newest edition of The Editor's Companion.

There was no meeting in September so as not to conflict with the National Editors Conference that was held in Sydney that month. October saw Professor Brian Nelson of Monash University holding forth on the topic of literary translation between different languages.

In November, Mark Rubbo, managing director of local bookshop chain Readings, gave us the perspective of today's book trade from an independent retailer. In December we held our annual Christmas dinner and trivia contest; this year, we added in a raffle for charity that raised $332 for the Australian Literacy and Numeracy Foundation.

In the new year, we started off in February with a workshop on the revision of the Australian Editing Standards, for which a number of hardy souls braved some outrageously wet weather from a freak summer storm - many thanks to those who could make it. In March, editor and novelist Glenys Osborne discussed how to wear both hats in her talk on 'The Writing Editor'.

We had our largest dinner meeting attendance ever in April, as 118 people came to hear Sarah Hazelton tell them everything an in-house editor needs to know about working with ebooks. We rounded up the year with a panel in May of three freelance editors - Jackey Coyle, Brad Collis and Campbell Aitken - discussing the ups and downs of the freelancing life; the evening was hosted by our own Freelance Affairs Officer Fran Madigan.

After three years organising dinner meetings, our 40th anniversary party and various other Editors Victoria events, I'll be taking a sideways move to focus on a different committee role in the coming year. I've loved being able to track down interesting people to talk for us all, but it's time to give someone else a chance. I hope you've all enjoyed our guest talks as much as I have, and as always, if you have any suggestions for speakers or topics, please do drop the events officer a line at
