A note from the president

by Renée Otmar, HLM, DE

Hola compañeros!

Yes, I can speak tacos and tequila after just two weeks in beautiful Mexico. And when I say 'beautiful' I mean everything: the people and culture, animals, landscape, beaches, weather and more. I was most fortunate to be able to enjoy my annual holiday in this ancient land of the Aztecs.

While I was sunning myself in sunny Cancun, our hardworking subcommittees have been slaving away, planning our professional development and training program, forthcoming meetings and, of course, next year's conference. This latter, über-exciting event will be gradually unveiling itself to you, dear readers, over the coming months as the Gantt chart slides towards 2019. Last month we revealed the dates (8–10 May 2019). This month it's the venue.

PULLMAN MELBOURNE ON THE PARK

192 Wellington Parade, East Melbourne

Located just 24 kilometres from Melbourne Airport, Pullman Melbourne On The Park hotel is located in the heart of the city's main sports and entertainment district: directly opposite the Melbourne Cricket Ground and enjoying stunning views of Fitzroy Gardens, Rod Laver Arena and Melbourne Park, home of the Australian Open tennis tournament. Walking distance to Melbourne's premier arts venues: 2.2 km to Federation Square, Ian Potter Centre – NGV Australia and the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI); 2.3 km to the National Gallery of Victoria, the Arts Centre Melbourne and Hamer Hall, and Sea Life Melbourne Aquarium.

Foodies, you could trek 2.4 km (on foot or by the free tram service) to Melbourne's vibrant Queen Victoria Market, or allow yourself to get lost in streets, laneways and arcades jam-packed with cafes and restaurants offering just about every delectable cuisine imaginable. Fashionistas, you'll be tantalisingly close to shopping heaven. Extra cash, time and space in your luggage: need we say more?

Exciting as it is, all of this will fade into the background once you have registered at the conference and locked eyes and minds with your fellow editors. We are planning a program to knock your socks off. The conference organising committee comprises a bunch of talented, connected and enthusiastic editors who – like most of you – are also very busy in their day jobs and personal lives. But I am delighted to be able to snaffle some of their valuable time, and we will be putting that to very good use in the coming months. Do stay tuned.

If you have any ideas or requests for conference presentation topics, workshops or entertainment, please do get in touch – I would love to hear from you.
