Message from the President

Ho, ho, ho – where has the year gone?

I write this the day after our final committee meeting for the year, where we continued to plan our strategy as a branch. We had much to discuss after seeing the results of our member surveys on communication and training (and we thank you for your valuable input!). Read on for the various portfolio reports to learn more about the many ideas our amazing volunteers have to enhance your membership.

Style Manual

I’m pleased that the federal Department of Finance is expected to announce the tender for the much-awaited production of the 7th edition of the Style manual in the first quarter of 2017. For many years we have been discussing the Style manual as a matter of some urgency, and a working group was formed before the national conference last year. Members were gradually added from Western Australia, South Australia, New South Wales and Queensland. IPEd's Style Manual Working Group now comprises some 14 editors.

The group is forging ahead with writing the tender and I have supported Janet Mackenzie and Lan Wang, both original members of the working group, as Editors Victoria’s representatives in the steering group for the first stage of writing the tender. Janet was involved in an earlier expression of interest to the Department of Finance and Lan Wang coordinates the group on a national level.

Editors Directory

Make sure to enter your details in the IPEd Editors Directory before the end of year. Once you have entered your details and paid, you’ll be good to go on New Year’s Day. There are two reasons I’m urging you to do this:

IPEd launches officially to stakeholders in February/March and will drive people towards the directory.

When the directory goes live on 1 January, our Editors Victoria Freelance Register will cease to exist.

Remember to check your emails from mid-November for instructions on setting up your entry.

I'd love to hear from you if you’d like to work on our committee! We’re especially looking for someone to help with events.

All the very best for a safe and happy Christmas and an inspired, productive new year.

Jackey Coyle
