Editing and Food at the February Dinner Meeting

Editors Victoria hosted its first dinner meeting for the year on 11 February 2015 - and set the bar high for things to come! We held the dinner in the private function room at CQ, a space that oozed warmth and intimacy. Beautifully laid tables had patterned runners and crisp white linen, and the room's large windows offered balcony views of Queen Street below.

To coincide with the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival, our evening had a foodie theme. Our speaker was the charming and friendly Hannah Koelmeyer. Hannah is the online content editor for Cooked, a digital initiative for cookbooks and recipes created by Hardie Grant Publishing. Cooked has been described as 'the Netflix of cookbooks', offering thousands of recipes from world-class chefs.

President Jackey Coyle opened the night, discussing upcoming events and her excitement for the year ahead. A highlight of the year will be Redact, Editors Victoria's flagship training event, which will take place later this year.

Carolyn Leslie acted as Master of Ceremonies, engaging Hannah in lively discussion about her role at Cooked, her thoughts on publishing, and her personal journey as an editor. The night really came alive, though, during the Q&A. The crowd was eager to ask questions - everything from 'Do you test the recipes?' to 'What do you cook when you're at home?' - and hands shot up as more and more people around the room took part in the laughter and cheerful conversation.

Thank goodness dinner was so scrumptious, or else all the talk of good food would have left us hungry! Chickpea, sundried tomato and couscous salad, fresh green salad, piles of baked new potatoes, vegetarian lasagne, and beef in creamy tomato sauce were all on the menu. This was followed by decadent chocolates with tea or coffee (or, in my case, hot water with lemon and honey, which CQ staff were more than happy to accommodate).

The door prize was the best we'd seen yet. The lucky winner, Anne Gugger, took home a copy of Editors in Conversations 2 and At the Typeface, chocolates, and a copy of Daniel Wilson's stunning new cookbook, Huxtabook: Recipes from Sea, Land and Earth (which had been generously donated by Hardie Grant).

It was a wonderful night filled with great food, great fun and even greater company.

We look forward to seeing you at our next dinner, which will take place at CQ on Thursday 16 April.
