President's Report

A new year is like a soft green flower bud. Although we have some idea of how it will open, we aren't totally sure until each day reveals a little more of the petals. One month into 2015, the colours and texture are beginning to show.

This year will be coloured by one of the biggest decisions we have had to make in our long history - our metamorphosis into a national body - and its final form is yet to be determined. One thing is certain, though - you will be a major part of forming the shape of our organisation for next year, next decade, next century.

How will a direct membership model of IPEd work on a day-to-day, week-to-week basis for our members, past, present and future? How do we honour our tradition as the largest, oldest society of editors in the country while strengthening our power, advocacy and clout to ultimately further the standing of our profession? How can we create economies of scale while retaining our distinctive identity? How do we fulfil the changing needs of our members?

This year is crunch time - you will be asked to review the direct membership model package in April/May in order to vote in August/September. It's of the utmost importance that as many of us as possible vote at this final poll, so we'll be holding an information session to help your decision-making.

The executive committee has met twice in January to work through the draft structure of the many facets of this package. We're finalising our feedback for the deadline in late February.

Meanwhile, I'm looking forward to our February dinner meeting! Our speaker will reflect Melbourne's foodie festival season. Hannah Koelmeyer is the online content editor for Cooked, Hardie Grant's premium recipe subscription site. Hannah will discuss her role as part of this delectable new frontier of food and trade publishing. It's on Wednesday 11 February - make sure to book by noon, Thursday 5 February.

And once you've sated your appetite you can sharpen that syntax - two more grammar training sessions are coming up this month.

Redact is pencilled in for November and we'll be calling for volunteers for a small team to put it together - do email me with expressions of interest. Some exciting new streams are in the mix. Stay tuned.

It's now official! Pam Firth is our new Training Coordinator. Pam brings to the role much experience in end-to-end event management, including the development and coordination of educational programs, research symposiums and seminar series, and professional development workshops. Our new calendar of courses will be released shortly.

Our 2015 Freelance Register is now up and running, so make sure to proofread your entry.

Thanks to our committee and staff, for their inspiration and perspiration. We're looking forward to fertilising this flower, watering it, encouraging more buds and admiring its colours.
